Steve,

 The problem w/ your technique is that it will not work when the keyboard
is locked. Using the System Request menu allows interrupting the job in
order to set the latch or any other task. This can be a generic solution
for many different task. The program stack can be retrieved and a
different action may be taken based on that or other criteria.

 I have seen this done (to conditionally add an option to the SysReq menu),
but I don't know how it was done.

 One suggestion that *might* work, since it's in a specific program, would
be to try to unlock the keyboard (via a conditioned DDS keyword) and then
using your technique.

Albert,

the SetAtnPgm command should do what you are asking.

write a cl pgm that sets one of the job switches
  PGM
  CHGJOB     SWS(1XXXXXXX)
  ENDPGM

here is the rpg code that tests the switch
 if          *inu1 = '1' ;
   dsply     'latch is set' ;
   *inu1     = '0' ;
 else ;
   dsply     'latch is not set' ;
 endif ;

and then SETATNPGM PGM(SETLATCH) at signon

Subject: Suggestion for a new System Request option

The System/36 used to have an option on the system request menu which was
called something like 'Set latch flag'. All it did was turn on an indicator
that you could test in your program. Then your program could take the
appropriate action. I used it for ending long searches for example. I would
really like to see something like that on the AS/400. Right now the only
choice we have is to end the whole program, which is pretty heavy handed.
