Well QShell always works in a kind of client/server way, in that its commands are not really executed at your interactive terminal session, but in a batch immediate job (job type BCI) or prestart job (PJ). The interactive session only accepts the input and displays the output. As I understand it, this is to emulate the idea of the "process" in Unix, where each command (with a few exceptions) starts a new process. None of which helps your problem very much. However, I just tried submitting a QSH command that ran a jar -cvf command, and it worked fine. We are on V5R1, and fairly up to date on PTFs. I don't think you ever said what release you're on. So perhaps you need a PTF?
