RE: OT - One for the (DUH) List...

These stories remind me of the time I switched off the power (intentionally)
of a rack that only had a tape drive in it ... whoops the power to the next
rack was chained off it ... it had three trays of 9337 disks in it.  I
turned the power back on immediately and the AS/400 never went down !!!  A
heart-attack followed by a renewed love for my reliable and resilient
AS/400.

More might or might not be better, though nowadays it probably is. Somewhere
around ten years ago, we found out that plugging at least some IBM PS/2s
into surge protectors could void the warrantys. It seems they had builtin
surge protectors, and adding an external surge protector could produce some
odd effect like a feedback that could cause damage. The user manuals warned
against it but you had to actually read the thing to discover it. (As if!)

I'd be surprised if that kind of engineering would go unnoticed today and
maybe even surprised if made it out of the lab... but it can't hurt to be
sure.
