Steve,

The programs that Leif writes about that can manufacturer pointers or
change themselves to system state are all patched programs. You can improve
the security of your system by preventing patch programs from being
restored onto it. One of the first steps to good security on iSeries is to
only use programs that are created with the trusted translator.

Thanks Ed for stepping in with the security guidelines and putting this in
perspective.

I believe that for most of us, worrying about patched programs being on
our system
is close to the Fort Knox people worrying about atomic bombs destroying the
gold.
If you have that scenario, you have bigger problems.

Leif, Lets see you read the 100 bytes from a program compiled from a
"Normal, Trusted, Complier"

I remember Ken Kelly(remember him?) doing a Q38 seminar back in 84ish
about converting your CL complier to compile MI. And How to read the
Functions Manual on the Sys/38
with the right kind of microfiche reader etc../.........

That is NOT what I mean when I said "Trusted, Normal, compiler"

I only know that I don't have an automatic update of Mcafee for my iSeries
like I do for my WinTel machines.

John
