But would that be a valid test? The bottom line is that I stored a source
member into the ifs and it took less than half the space that it did in
the qsys.lib directory.

But, just to get off on a tangent, confuse people, and waste time I did
the following:
RMVM FILE(ROB/SCOTT) MBR(*ALL)
ADDPFM FILE(ROB/SCOTT) MBR(ORD500)
DSPOBJD OBJ(ROB/SCOTT) OBJTYPE(*FILE)
Object Type Attribute Size
SCOTT *FILE PF 24,576
Then I editted it and stuck 1000 lines in it.
DSPOBJD OBJ(ROB/SCOTT) OBJTYPE(*FILE)
Object Type Attribute Size
SCOTT *FILE PF 114,688

EDTF STMF('/rob/scott2.rpg')
added 1000 lines, each with 92 characters, all like the following:
....+....1....+....2....+....3....+....4....+....5....+....6....+....7....+....8....+....9..
12345678911234567892123456789312345678941234567895123456789612345678971234567898123456789912

WRKLNK OBJ('/rob/scott2.rpg')
8=Display attributes
Allocated size of object . . . . . . . : 98,304

Granted, that is a little closer, but how many source files use all 92
characters, on every line? My sample of a real world RPG program took
less than half the space as a source physical file.

Source physical files gobble disk space.

Rob,

The difference is that for PF, the space for the whole record is required
even if you only have 1 character in the record. For the IFS, all the
'whitespace' is removed.

Try creating a IFS file with all the lines filled out to 92 chars...
