Larry, Fax over email (which we do) has the many of the same delivery confirmation issues as plain email. When this is happening from the source, Agreed. BUT, if it is Fax from your company to theirs, and they choose to email the received fax (which we also do), there are fewer points of failure than with email end to end. And even with "pure" fax, you still have "report distribution" issues. Agreed with that also. And also agreed that if send something to Fred, the only way you can be SURE Fred got it is when Fred TELLS you that he has it. The bottom line is that there is no way to deliver with absolute certainty that the recipient actually got it. Even with FedEx. Just because it gets to the mailroom is no guarantee that it will get to Fred. Especially if at some point Fred pissed off the guy who runs the mailroom! And any given company is capable of screwing things up at least some of time. Because even if Fred calls to tell you he has it, that might be when his kid runs in with a stubbed toe (or sectary with a mild emergency) and distracts Fred who promptly forgets about the entire thing! But I do stand that at least with fax, your "Confirmation of Delivery" means much more than with email. The needs of the application will determine what level of confirmation is needed. And in a court of law, a fax is acceptable in many cases (if that is how things are "normally" done). Email to my knowledge is not. In fact with fax servers these days in many cases the end user get an Email containing the fax! So now you have MULTIPLE points of failure. AFAIC unless 'Fred' tells me he got it, either by voice or some electronic acknowledgement, 'Fred' ain't got it. Fax me anything at all and I probably will NOT get it and even if I do it'll be lost soon. Email it to me and I've probably still got it. (More importantly I can find it too!!) - Larry
