you can open any member, as well as invoking commitment control.

That isn't to say it can't be done, but if it can, I don't know how.
You can also get the current version of ADO (free download from M$ - look
for MDAC_TYP.EXE) and use the methods directly. I'm doing that with AVR, so
I can't see why it wouldn't work with VB4, or anything else that supports
ActiveX.
