Debugging script-based FTP sessions is one of the reasons to use a
commercial product like Alliance (not affiliated.)  If your money budget is
small and your time budget large, check out Scott Klement's FTP API.  You
can find the link in the FAQ under FTP.  http://faq.midrange.com

I don't personally know of a way to write your own entries to FTP's stdout
or sdterr, but if you figure one out, please add it to the FTP FAQ!
