Sounds like it.  I am not a Query/400 user but I have taken some Query/400
queries and turned them into QMQRYs.  If you RTVQMQRY, put that into
QQMQRYSRC source file and CRTQMQRY, you can use STRQMQRY OUTPUT(*OUTFILE) to
dump your SELECTed records into a file in QTEMP.  I can't reach the FAQ or
archives at the moment, but searching on RTVQMQRY should get you going.

It's either that or keep the template file around for a CRTDUPOBJ into QTEMP
as you suggested.
