RE: Question on Tape Drive Replacement


Chuck,

The LTO refers to the "Linear Tape Open" standard which IBM co-developed
with other vendors.  This would be the IBM line of 358x drives.  Magstar
would include the IBM-proprietary 3590 and 3570 lines.

I got curious about prices and ran a quick configuration.  According to
the configurator, current list prices are below:


Ultrium Autoloader      3581-H17        $8,060  $1,380 annual maint.
TotalStorage Tape               3590-B1A        $29,500 $238 monthly
maint.

You might look at a different model of the 3590, but the above gives a
general idea of the difference in pricing scale between the two classes
of devices.
