Slight correction: 10 and 100Mb will operate happily *HALF or *FULL on only
two pairs. Clearly bad cable can preclude the use of 100Mb speeds but if the
cable works at *HALF it will work for *FULL duplex. If you intend to go to
1000Mb (1Gb) then you will need ALL FOUR pairs correctly wired and you WILL
need cat5 or better wire.

Chris is right that basic cable testers don't test for duplex because they
don't actually communicate with the switch or hub, they just test the wire.
