This is a very interesting site. It lead me to the 1988 site, http://www-1.ibm.com/ibm/history/history/year_1988.html where I reviewed the AS/400 announcement. Of course, no one at IBM knows what an AS/400 is, so the picture shows a 9402 model which was not announced until (at least) 1991. The text goes on to say that "As part of the introduction, IBM and IBM Business Partners worldwide announce more than 1,000 software packages in the biggest simultaneous applications announcement in computer history.", which was a correct statement at our announce in June 1988. Of course by 1991 when the 9402 was announced, the number was 28,000. Always count on IBM to look at the glass as half empty. BTW, those 28,000 applications might prove to be what kills us. I recently reviewed the "state of the art AS/400 country club software package", and found a poorly ported S/36 application;-((((((, so my club is buying something that runs in a Windoze environment.
