Question about drive configuration -- MIDRANGE-L

Folks:

I'm not a hardware guru ... I've got a question about drive configuration on
our 9406-170 (V5R1).

We recently purchased a two new 8gb drives for the system, IBM installed and
configured them like this ...

The two new drives are 5 & 6 (drive 7 is in an ASP by itself, for testing
purposes).

We really don't need to have the drives mirrored ... is it possible to put
the two new drives in the party set with the others?  Our ITS guy thinks
they cannot because of the difference in size.

My main goal is to maximize the disk available, while also providing some
failure protection.  Mirroring (IMHO) wastes drive space and provides
un-needed protection.
