Nelson,

The late bound copy numeric value APIs work pretty well for this sort
of
thing. The iSeries-toolkit provides an implementation that supports
conversion from-to any numeric format. You can download the
iSeries-toolkit at http://www.iseries-toolkit.org. You can review the
code at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/iseries-toolkit/CVSROOT/src/qrpglesrc/cvtnumfmt.irp?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup.

When calling this API on a *DEC type of dataarea, the value is returned
in a
variable-sized area of the Receiver, along with fields defining the
length
and decimal positions. Does anyone have an example of the best way to
convert this packed decimal-data value to a numeric field when you
don't
know the size and decimal positions until after the retrieval? I'm
trying to
build a generic wrapper that would handle all sizes of numeric data
areas.
