If you define "share" as having multiple partitions use a hardware resource
concurrently, then you are correct, you cannot share.

However you CAN switch the hardware from one LPAR to another, so they can
all use it but only one at a time. You must switch a whole IOP (all the
resources on the IOP).

It is also nice to be able to dynamically move CPU and memory around if you
need to give someone a boost.

It makes administration of software and maintenance contracts easier because
there is only one serial number.

It would depend on your specific needs as to how useful LPAR would be. If
you need to have all the same hardware available all the time on all the
partitions, then you're going to have to duplicate everything and you're not
going to benefit much in tht respect.

It would obviously be better to be able to "pool" the resources as you have
suggested, however what we have now is still better than what we had before,
and perhaps that ability will be added.
