Jeff,

Those two directories represent the current directory ('.') and the
parent directory ('..') within a number of different file systems.
Which file system are you finding these in?  If you were to do a 5 on
'.', you should stay right where you are.  The '..' should move you one
directory up the tree unless you're already in the root.
