We had a very similar configuration on our system lo those many years ago, and I seem to recall two snag points that caused something like what you're describing: (1) those modem cables we a bit odd in their configuration (2) we never got VT100 working, we had to use one of the other emulations, but I don't remember which. (The session just didn't work because it didn't correctly interpret hitting the enter key to see the session.) Of course, that was a long, long time ago and my memory could be faulty on that.
