I badly represented the problem in my first note. We are trying to
select on a name with an apostrophe in it.
Doubling the apostrophe was the key though. This code finally worked:

Bite the bullet and double up the apostrophe - do some kind of SCAN on it
and insert an apostrophe wherever found
