my more than ample gutt tells me that it was because I dont' recall a
endsys cmd on the s/38 and most of us old farts learned it back on the
s/38 or were taught by an old fart that learned it back on a s/38....:)
Back then we had TRMSBS but no TRMSYS...actually went down to the dungeon
to check my old pocket guide...from CPF 8.1...:)

And, as I recall, IBM docs are repleat with the ENDSBS vs ENDSYS

As for the more typing being COBOL'ish....nah, we prefer the more typing
of the BAL....not to mention the pain...:)
