James, The 8xx is a no-brainer and the obvious choice (you know it will work), so the thoughts below are those things to consider which would eliminate the 270 from consideration. Primarily, you need to understand your potential for growth. While you can get equivalent processing capability, will you be able to grow while remaining in the 270 chassis? CPW is CPW, so if you find a 270 more powerful than your 510, then the processor should meet your needs. As you move from the 510 will need to be concerned with both interactive and processor CPW. Know the difference and know that you cannot upgrade the interactive CPW of a 270. The three models of 270 (with interactive capabilities) have 30, 50, and 70 interactive CPW respectively. If you start at 30 and need more, then you must upgrade the processor. On the 8xx series you would not need to upgrade the processor, but rather would purchase additional interactive capacity. Disk arms are another factor. With the 17 GB drives, I'm sure that you can get equivalent total capacity, but also verify that you can install an appropriate number of arms for your application needs and future growth, even if you have acres of unused storage, you may need the arms for satisfactory performance. The last consideration would be card slots. Make sure that you have a few empty for future use. Which processor 510 are you moving from? Main storage? Disks? I'm assuming that you are primarily running green-screen applications. Regardless of whether you go with the 270 or the 8xx, you're going to be pleasantly flabbergasted with how fast your batch moves.
