Bingo.  And no additional hardware is required on your 400.  Just the
cable that goes from the UPS to plug J14 on the back of your iSeries.  The
UPS company normally supplies this.  For instance if you tell Best you are
buying a particular model of one of their UPS' and hooking up to a
particular model of an iSeries then they'll get you the right cable.  Test
it.  I just did because I couldn't read the J14 with the cable plugged in.

Rick,

The short answer is to get a UPS which is compatible with the AS/400 and
marketed as such.  Many vendors have this feature.  It will come with a
cable (9-pin serial I think) which connects the UPS to the CPU.  This
will then generate the messages to which the OS will react.
