Actually this can work both ways:

Open source a base program.
Let some big corporation with lots of money develop an add on.
Let them spend lots of money on advertising, packaging, and promotion.
Hit their customer base with the info that it was YOU, not the big corporation
that wrote the core code.
Steal the customer.

Oh, and while you are looking through the customers stuff, see if the big
corporation violated the GPL or whatever license you use and sue the pants off
the big corporation. :)
