I work for a software vendor now and I've worked for them in the past. Only one has ever failed, and it's the same one that also failed to control source code adequately. Sales dwindled to essentially zero and it was discovered far too late to do anything that the basic package (for medical billing) was already installed at prospect sites. None of the prospects had any reason to suspect there was anything wrong. Any software house that does not keep source under control is risking the jobs of its employees not to mention assets of investors. Sheesh, and I believe in open source too. Go figure.
