RPGIV can handle Date,Time, Nulls. RPGIII can if you compile it to bring in Date ,Time, Timestamp as character fields(CREATE command option). I used to do it in RPGIII when we had the DB support for the data types but not RPG support (V2R3 ???) Made my data bases with Data/Time Data types waiting for my language to catch up. Glad I did. You have to deal with the data "As If" Date time data types (it's really represented as a character field to RPGIII). Make sure you only put in valid Date Time data into fields if you write/update records. (RPGIII couldn't deal with nulls if I remember right) RPGIV is a GREAT language to write triggers in on the iSeries. Better than SQL 'cause I can do all the things that RPG can do great that SQL doesn't do great (ie easy to write logic control, CHAINs, Calls, etc. etc.) Can be coded with pointers very generically John Carr ----------------------------------------------- I just want to ask is this a true statement? We do not have the SQL Toolkit we are on V5R1 and have not used many triggers on the DB files. One thing that struck me as odd is the statement that RPG could not handle the date and time data types or null values. "I am asking this question because the old Load Schedule used system triggers that I wrote in RPG to autoincrement primary keys. I tried the same technique for the J2EE version of the Load Schedule, but it does not work because the new tables use date and time data types (so that it is easier to work with Java) and because of null values." Also, what is the prefered method for writing triggers? RPG, SQL
