I thought Jon Paris mentioned one (S/390 laptop). I know I heard reference to an AIX laptop as well, though I'm not sure that running a laptop on an Intel version of AIX is any sort of technical triumph.... <g> Eric DeLong Sally Beauty Company MIS-Sr. Programmer/Analyst 940-898-7863 or ext. 1863 -----Original Message----- From: James Rich [mailto:james@eaerich.com] Sent: Friday, April 12, 2002 1:04 PM To: midrange-l@midrange.com Subject: Built in console (was Re: Cheaper Servers?) The one advantage I see is a reliable and uncomplicated restricted state. This simplifies upgrades and other times that require a restricted state. A dedicated console would be very easy to implement. I have sitting here an IBM Infowindow II. This little box has twinax, SVGA, and keyboard connectors. This device should be integrated into the iSeries. Just remove the twinax part of the device. Then you would have a connector for SVGA and one for keyboard. This is a simple solution that requires no or very little OS modification. If other fancier methods of implementing a console are wanted they could be used. But this should be provided as a minimum. Note that this has nothing to do with trying to make a portable system. As has been pointed out, potential customers will all be accessing the machine with a client, so a proper sales demo will use a client. No need to lug an iSeries all over the place. Note also that there are no portable Crays or S/390s.
