Take a look at www.dshield.org. It displays the latest statistics on the hacks being performed around the world, by country. The stats are pulled from the logs of all forms of firewall "services", reported on a daily or hourly basis. Firewall appliances are just computers that have a "hardened" OS supporting some type of firewall application. This can be done with any OS. It just depends on whether you outsource the work to bullet proof the box or roll your own. The point here is to have control over who has access to what resource.
