Dare is your attempt to query this file a new initiative ? Or something that was working and suddenly stopped working ? I don't suppose you have a home grown user profile creation routine do you ? Is there someone there fooling with API's ? I seem to remember that you can get at the extended object attribute using the object API's... I have routinely done the stuff you are trying to do for years as part of my various system management regimes without any problems, so it seems like you are going to find its something local.
