If TCP hung up, the entire network seemed to stop. No access to Internet, mail, etc. I use the gateway when working away from the office. Currently I use VNC to get a session, then TN5250 or similar emulation product to talk to my iSeries system. If the gateway stopped, my whole network stopped. Every PC tended to hang and had to be rebooted. It was a serious problem. Most of the time it was the desktop that had the problem. TCP stopped. The machine appeared to hang/go very slow.
