I have never had a problem with this. Some objects in QGPL and QUSRSYS get
replaced, just as they would if you were upgrading from CD. I have upgraded
30 systems this way so far (with 150 left to go) and it is by far the best
way to go. I have a C/L program which does some preprocessing and then IPLs
from the distribution tape. The LIC, O/S and licensed products are
automatically restored. After the upgrade, the program QLPUSER in QGPL is
called, if it is there, to do any post-upgrade processing. When you create
the distribution tape you select an installation profile to use and that
controls what gets restored.
I also try to keep as much stuff as possible out of QGPL and QUSRSYS.

I know from experience this option can work but it took de QGPL and
QUSRSYS
from the upgraded box,
Made a nice mess of the QGPL on 30 other machines!
