As Phil said, things work best when you precreate the source physical
file. Then ftp on the 400 adds the SRCSEQ and SRCDAT fields to YOUR
data, which goes into the SRCDTA field. This saves you the extra CPYF
step.

If you send a file to AS/400 with ftp and there is no file already
there, the server creates it as a flat file, record length that of
whatever you sent. If you want fields, you need to predefine the
physical.
