While converting most of an RPG program to COBOL wouldn't be out of reach due to the common usage of RPG columnar formats, the supporting stuff from OS/400, etc., would be killer. And I wouldn't even try to imagine converting any serious ILE CL modules. Even for the basic RPG==>COBOL, support for external file descriptions would be a challenge to say the least. I'm not familiar with Linux offerings for externally-described printer files for example. Far too often, the focus is on what's inside the RPG envelope; but an AS/400 or iSeries is primarily defined by what's supplied outside of RPG (or COBOL).
