YES! Never retrieve that kind of information from the message, for
precisely the reasons you stated. Instead you should use the message
data.
Job number is found in positions 21 to 26 of the message in question.

So instead

RCVMSG MSGDTA(&MSGDTA)
CHGVAR &JOBNO %SST(&MSGDTA 21 6))
