First, it exists on every system I can ever remember, going back to somewhere in version 1, possibly before the API was made available. Second, it's almost trivial to use even from a command line. And third, by using a DDM *dtaara on one system, you can easily check the VRM on a remote system -- and that can really help in the right situations.
