This is to prevent endless rework when the original adapter dies and has to be replaced with a new one. Of course, one could always choose the number of the first adapter which, since the original is now broken and theoretically never to be used again, is a number never to be duplicated anywhere else in the world. The key, I suppose, is NEVER use the example in the book word-for-word.
