Using Notes/Domino as an example, the Inbox Rules are evaluated and run on
the server.  So if I tell it to delete a certain message or move it to a
folder, it does so as soon as the message arrives.  If I then connect with
a POP client, I would only retrieve the messages that had not been deleted.

That is what Walden was referring to.

And yes, other POP servers could do the same thing, so it isn't strictly a
limitation of POP.  POP is just an interface to a mail box, the mail server
can do whatever it wants.

maybe I used the wrong word.  For the message to be filtered on my side
don't I have to get it first over the phone line (that was my
"in-channel")?
It is getting it that takes the time. How does the server know that I don't
want a given message?
