Multi format logical file - will it be a resource hog?

Hi there,
        I have been given the specs to create the files for a new tooling
system.  So far I have 26 different file formats.  I was thinking of
creating a physical file for each format and then a multiformat logical
file.  Will this multiformat logical file be a resource hog when used in
various RPG and COBOL programs?  Query?  Is there a better solution??
