Hi Mike, competitor There were threads (check archives for COPYING 400 spool file to data file to PC) that were a big help to me before we had most PC users on CA. Today our people use CA to click on the report they want into PC whatever format ... spread sheet seems to be the most popular, but I have also seen query/400 reports imported into e-mail ... that is really extremely useful for user to be able to create a report on the fly & send it in an e-mail to a contact. There was a time that we had a lot of users on different types of emulations & the hassle was that there was no one way to get data from 400 to PC ... there were a bunch of different ways, depending on the emulation installed for a particular PC. So in that reality, I set up a menu option - actually a set of menu options. 1. Is this a standard 132 print position report or is it 198 wide? Answer to that question = which width file it needs to be copied to. 2. Do you want a copy that you cannot modify on the 400, strictly output to a physical file, or do you want a copy on 400 in source file format that can be manipulated with SEU before to PC ... perhaps you only want PART of the report, perhaps you want to add some notes ... perhaps you using this to create a how-to document like a manual ... turned out I was the only person interested in this kind of application. So this led to which CL they ran, of several menu options. They need to key in the JOB identification data which they can get from WRKSPLF USER or WRKOUTQ PRINTER screens, and which file # within that job, then the CL does copy spool file report from what they specified to either the 132 wide or 198 wide file in either physical or source file format, and a name was assigned to it ... this all was in its own library. Users had another menu option to SEU access the source file member if they went that route & I had an SEU document of tips for SEU users unfamiliar with this 400 tool. The library that this went into was a shared ownership group - anyone can create the work file & anyone with a PC can download it. So for a time, I had happy users who went to WRKSPLF or whatever to select the report(s) they wanted, copy them to members of generic work files, then download those members to their PC, but as soon as most PC users on CA, they switched to that route, which gives them the same thing, without wasting 400 disk space on intermediate work files, or having to figure out if it is 132 198 or what they want to do with it.
