There is 5769AC3 Crypto Access Provider 128-bit for AS/400 (host) and
5769CE3   Client Encryption 128-bit (client) available. This is a "free"
product that comes with the system, but you have to order it from IBM (read
Business Partner) because of export laws. There are other levels of
protection available, but go with 128 if possible.

Also, there IS a performance hit. On newer systems there is a hardware card
available to offload the verification from the CPU.
