No although I have dabbled with them (we've replaced them with
Trailblazer). I was specifically talking about the product from IBM
Connect for iSeries. It's hard for me to define what the product is -

Mike:
Are you talking about the Connect: products from Sterling Software? As far
as I know, they are the old SuperTracs software that have been updated to
include things like FTP. It has been quite a while since I have used this
software..... but most of the time if I need some comm stuff, I just write
my own.

EDI defines the "data format" standard, not the communications standard.
This is totally left to be decided by the 2 trading partners. Back in the
old UCS/WINS days, we actually DID define HOW communications would take
place between 2 partners. Back then it was all direct comms (no VANS) and
all BSC. We started with Bell 201 (2400 1/2 duplex) as our standard and
then "upgraded" it to Bell 208 (4800 half duplex). By the time the merger
happened w/X.12, that all changed and we have the variety of communications
we have today. There are advantages to all the various methods, but you
are
correct, it is NOT simple or standard.

Carl,

Another product that I am very interested in is Connect for iSeries. Do
you have any experience or knowledge with this?

I think one of the challenges is that while there are standards and
standard practices it seems everyone has their own spin on data
interchange. Trying to create an affordable data interchange capability
that offers many methods is pretty hard. EDI, XML, SSH, SSL, PGP, FTP,
SMTP, HTTP, public exchanges, private exchanges,.....................it's
hard to keep up with.

The changes I mentioned earlier were that we have a lot of people
interested in exchanging data but they do not want to use a VAN..........so
we have been expanding our capabilities so that we can offer a VAN method
and a non-VAN method. I personally like (except for the fact that everyone
wants to do it differently) the idea of server to server processing with
our customers. So we have picked up the Trailblazer software so that we
can do SMTP, FTP, and HTTP transmits of data......and also be able to do it
encrypted.
