Wish I could give a similar endorsement, but...

We have a VB application that connects to either DB2 or a SQL Server
database depending on the type of user (both connect using ODBC). Every
performance comparison we run show exponential differences in SQL Servers
favor. We are comparing on the desktop, from the time the request is made
until the result is returned.

The differences are especially apparent on the initial request - first time
running the statement or stored procedure. Even after the AS/400 is
'primed', however, there is a consistent 1/10 to 1/2 second of 'overhead' in
the AS/400 requests. Running debug on the AS/400 shows the database itself
is competitive, but the ODBC layer seems to be much slower when compared to
the SQL server connection.

Has anybody found similar results? More important, has anybody found a
solution to this?

Thanks, JN

OK - I remember cheering loudly - jumping up & down, and I also remember
similar performance when I was manipulating a 60,000 record file on a PC
@ the time.

DB2 on an AS/400 is the flat footest, most fantastic - quick as
a bunny - faster then a speeding bullet Database in the world. Problem
is, a green screen ain't going to show it off unless you're crunching
reports @ Light speed. You need "Yahoo like" traffic to see the real
lookup speed. A relational database on an AS/400 kicks the butt off of
mainframes, etc..

Andrew,
Do you have any more detail? How was the Query done on the AS/400
and what was the backend db for the PC
cheers Dave

<. In
Computerworld - I read of a company that had to switch back from PC
Server to AS/400 - the simple query on the 400 that was 5 minutes was 45
minutes on a PC... for Database - the 400 is the fastest on the
planet...
