Actually, I don't think it comes from lazyness, or it doesn't in
my case anyway, but from forgetfulness. When I plan on replying
to a digest mode message I first copy the message I"m replying to,
hit replay, select all the text, replace it with the message I
am replying, copy the subject line, paste the subject line into
the message subject, edit the message to remove superflous information
such as footers, then go to the top of the message and type my
reply.

Sometimes it's just easy to forget a step, and the subject line step
is the easiest to skip since it's not as obvious as any of the others.

The problem here is the person replying to the Digest, not the Digest
itself.
We all are sometimes lazy, some people lazy more often.
Reply to Digest should cut & paste the original subject to the Subject of
the
reply & be extremely careful not to quote the entire digest in the reply to
one part of it.
This means that people replying to digest mode have to do a little more work
than people replying to ordinary messages, but there are lazy users of both
digest & standard.
