Is it worthwhile to compress and uncompress files anymore?  Is the time and
energy taken to FTP the files all that expensive anymore, given the speed
data travels at today?

Doesn't the RUNRMTCMD suffice? In any event, I don't believe you need the
source for these commands. Seems this can be done strictly with FTP.
I started on a project to do this for a client, but never finished it. Been
meaning to refresh my memory on the thing, and if you want to take the FTP
route I can post something on it (although maybe not the code).
