As it happens, the evaluation version doesn't time out, though there is a
remimnder splash screen. I bought my copy around version 2 (about five
years ago) and got free upgrades until version 4, which required about a
$10 (6.50 GBP) top up.

As far as downloadable extras go, there's a big selection. Lots of
additional syntax libraries, clip libraries, macros, dictionaries, etc.
Have a look at the add-ons link from the main page.

If you'd like to try a genuinely free editor, I'd recommend looking at
Vim - http://www.vim.org which is what I use in Linux, but the Win32 port
is just as up to date. Contains a big range of syntax highlighting files
and various add-ons. Does file diffs, side by side locked scrolling, etc.
Open up the same file multiple times and edit different sections at the
same time and the list goes on. It's not quite as intuitive as the likes
of Textpad, but probably more powerful once you get to know it - I'm
hooked :) There are even Amiga, OS/2 & Mac ports, as well as just about
every *nix platform
