Sean, Most remote users have some type of POP3/SMTP client on their Windoze desktop. SMTP relay is needed for them to send email. The loose "standard" is to have a secured SMTP using the same user ID/password as POP3 or IMAP. How would you propose setting up the SMTP server on the AS/400 or Domino to service these users without the user/password technique? (That's why I use POP3S or IMAPS instead of |POP3 or IMAP.) Look at SMTP AUTH if that's what you want. |
