This single program to access a file is how Lansa is based.  They call it an 
object access module.  I know they don't take credit
for inventing the concept, it's been around awhile.

It's an interesting idea.  Lansa uses their OAM's to create "virtual fields".  
Since everyone has to do a FETCH or SELECT through
the OAM, the OAM can add other fields that are derived from calculations or 
through Joins.  For instance, an OAM can return the
customer name as well whenever the customer# is physically in the file.
