R. Bruce,

Sounds like a target of opportunity, for the iSeries. Low-end systems are
available now and will, and almost certainly will continue to become
cheaper. There is a vast network of VAR's and small independent contractors
(who are extremely hungry, of late). This combination, plus the failure of
HPs e3000, and a large number of other things point to a /potential/ HUGE
opportunity for the 400, IMV.

The network that links the necessary ingredients has not quite "gelled".
Can be done, I'd think, fairly easily. Potential HUGE $$$, IMV. One of the
primary assets of the 38/400/i, of course, is that an individual or small
group can support a very large number of small businesses. I'd think IBM
and larger ISVs could make some /very serious/ "chump change" supporting
these folks... Would take a while to build momentum, and I think this is
the choke-point.

Some businesses, of course, will choose the "do-it-yourself", "do-it-on-the
cheap" Linux approach. Obviously, the 400 already has Linux available, and
every indication is that Linux will probably continue to be optimized to run
on the iSeries. Especially if the iSeries ever merges with the pSeries...!
Looking at the entire industry, the pSeries appears to lead the pack with
AIX-5L, with the i & zSeries following close behind (as far as I can tell).

I'm sure many businesses will continue going the route of the
seemingly-cheap approach of M$, and OSS, however. Don't know about the rest
of the above, but this is "certain". The xSeries already has a firm place
in this marketspace, so that may work against some of this other stuff ever
actually happening.

TAA (Thanks As Always) for your views, Bruce...!
