Carl: Can I come to work for you? Phil: I am with you on this one. I own a small consulting company and this is exactly the model I have used for my business. I have about a dozen folks. I pay them VERY well, but offer no real benefits. (except the pleasure of working for me). Some opt for contractor status (my CPA is careful to see that we do no upset the IRS), some want a W2. They are all professionals and are capable of deciding how to spend their money and what benefits are important to them. They take care of themselves. They all have the option to work from home, come to our office or on site at the clients (depending on the requirements of the client), or any combination of the above. We have no set work hours or really any dumb rules. We focus on only one thing, satisfying the needs of our customer. For 11 years we have been successful with this, and have VERY LITTLE turnover. I believe if you give people the freedom to do what they need and want and set the expectations to fulfill the needs of the customer, the rest falls into place. People are VERY motivated to have the flexibity to set their schedules and their lives. Hard to argue with success. cjg Carl J. If I had my way there would be no such thing as fringe benefits. Let me budget my own money. Keep your grubby mits off of it and out of my business. All an employer needs to do is pay me cash. Anything more is enslavement. I'll even bring my own tools. In fact, I'll provide office space in my basement and telecommunications to the server. You (employer) just send me cash. And I can pay my taxes too. They're due quarterly. Not on payday. So you send me ALL the cash and I'll pay my taxes quarterly. Or not. Maybe I'll pay annually. But don't concern yourself with it. It's not any of your business. Ya, now we're talking freedom.
