Snort - if it is in Oracle, tell them to do a dump of the database schema.
For 6000 tables,
it should take perhaps, 10 minutes or so of their time. What it will
generate is the SQL that
will tell you exactly how the tables are related to each other, and in fact,
enable you to recreate
the database if you need to.

This is *not* something unusual for Oracle DBA's - in fact it is so common I
would say they are
feeding you a line of B.S. Push them a little bit, tell them you understand
thier time is valuable,
so just give you a dump of the database schema *along* with the data and you
will be on your
way...

Then complain like the devil to their managment once you get what you need.
:)
