I am not in the service/support area so I asked some questions myself about
what IBM's position is relative to your question. The folks I talked to
were not ready to give an explicit yes or no answer at this time, but they
did provide this response:

IBM takes each and every unique service/support agreement very seriously.
It is beneficial to both parties, when our customers follow problem
determination, problem analysis, and service request procedures that IBM
provides. By avoiding the use of "patched" programs and applying the most
current HIPER PTFs, our customers can continue to expect the highest levels
of service IBM has to offer.
