Thanks Chuck,

Called Pacific Data, and spoke with a gentleman who helped me out.

Turned out that the cleaning cartridge was at the end of the reel. I
had to manually eject the cartridge using the white plastic lever on the
side of the drive. The cleaning media still did not get wound back into
the cartridge, so I had to carefully lift it out. Put the drive back
together, put in another cleaning cartridge, and voila!, we're off and
running again.

The Pacific Data gentleman asked me whether the cleaning cartridge used
the white or the black cleaning media. I thought it was white (it
turned out it was dark brown; it's a Maxell HS-8/CL) and he said that
the white cleaning media is not correct for the 7208-222.

The other cleaning cartridge that I ended up using *did* have the white
cleaning media. This is the IBM 8mm Cleaning Cartridge and it says to
"log 12 cleanings". This particular cleaning cartridge is used for the
7208-012 we have for our other AS/400. I don't know if the operator
knew to distinguish between the two. This is the first time I've ever
heard of the different cleaning cartridge types. Can anyone point me to
documentation for this?

And, yes, now that it's working again, I'm calling IBM today to get this
put on maintenance.
